Making Tax Digital

Are you ready for MTD Income Tax?

From 6 April 2026, self-employed individuals and landlords with rental income must keep digital records and submit five digital filings a year.

Making Tax Digital for Self Assessment Income Tax (MTD ITSA) is a fundamental change to the UK tax system. Paper records are no longer accepted for those in scope.

What HMRC requires

  1. Maintain accounting records digitally (e.g. Xero or Sage Business Cloud Accounting)
  2. Submit details of income and expenditure to HMRC on a quarterly basis
  3. Submit an Annual Return to HMRC

The annual Self Assessment tax return is replaced by five digital submissions — the first covering April to June 2026.
